Who Is HurriKanen’s Kids?
HurriKanen’s Kids was founded by 12 year old, Kanen Keating-Wear and his parents, Lauren and Michael. In 2013, at 5 years old, Kanen was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. He spent 10 months in treatment with most of his time in CHOP’s inpatient pediatric cancer wing.
Kanen went on to be cancer free for just shy of 5 years before relapsing in December 2017. After an initial 8 hour spinal surgery to remove a tumor to his sacrum sac; Kanen would endure 7 months of chemotherapy and radiation to his entire spine before discovering the disease had moved to the lining of his brain. Kanen continued treatment which included another spinal surgery, brain radiation, chemotherapy and unsuccessful trials at Sloan Kettering in NYC.
Scans taken in August 2019 showed advanced progression. Kanen, now 11 years old, made the difficult decision to stop treatment. Kanen celebrated his 12th birthday on October 10, 2019 and peacefully passed away 4 days later surrounded by his family. From the very start of Kanen’s experience with pediatric cancer he had an insatiable drive to support other families in any way he was able.
HurriKanen’s Kids is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific and education purposes in order to enrich the lives of families affected by pediatric cancer with a goal of eradicating it. Hurrikanen's Kids 5 year strategic aim is to be able to expand support to families nationwide and contribute to medical and holistic treatment research.
We aim to offer financial resources as well as classes to keep families educated and up to date on clinical trials and navigational information.
